Something as simple as not complaining about the meal when your husband cooks, not grumbling in the morning… can help you save your marriage and avoid the risk of divorce.

Winifred M. Reilly, a psychologist, shared the following experiences, and therapist in marriage and family issues in Berkeley, California (USA) shared:

Like most newlyweds, my husband and I entered our marriage with rose-tinted glasses, looking bright and unprepared. With the abundant love of youth, we believe we will succeed. But it turned out that marriage was more challenging than we expected, even though we had both just celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary.

We also quarreled, blamed, and experienced many ups and downs, but we all learned and matured a lot after that. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned on the hard road of marriage, not just theory from psychology:

How to save my marriage

1. Do not decide to divorce when you are stressed before your period (or when you are weak, tired, or have just returned from a long distance…).

2. Regularly express gratitude.

3. Generosity may be the most important thing to happiness.

4. Admit your shortcomings.

5. Most arguments are living proof of your immaturity. The sooner you grow up, the happier you will be.

6. When you think you’ve tried to do something, know that you really haven’t done it (for example, forgive a husband’s mistake).

7. Cleanliness is a relative concept.

8. Don’t expect to be completely understood.

9. Trying to get the right part can cost you everything.

10. Many of the things you argue about so vehemently turn out not to be worth arguing about.

11. Your definition of sexy will change over time. It may no longer be six-pack abs or a charming smile, but simply: Husband goes out when it rains heavily to lock the gate.

12. Don’t be afraid to apologize first. It’s not painful or embarrassing at all.

13. Pay more attention to your own mistakes and pay less attention to the petty mistakes of your spouse.

14. When your spouse’s actions seem shady, pay more attention to their motives.

15. It’s foolish to stay up late arguing that one or both of you are too tired to “love”.

16. Forget the advice not to go to bed angry. Just go to sleep because maybe things will be different the next morning.

17. When people say marriage is hard, believe them.

18. If you are going to complain about something, talk to each other and make a suggestion instead of complaining.

19. Feelings of hate are perfectly normal in many situations. Don’t panic or take it too seriously.

20. If you want something, ask for it.

21. The louder your partner screams, the more you need to be quiet and calm.

22. Disappointment is inevitable. Life becomes much easier when you accept this.

23. There is no guarantee that divorce will be avoided. All we can do is be a wife or husband that only fools would leave.

24. Sometimes sharing the housework will not be very equal. But that’s not worth complaining about.

25. Accept apologies generously.

26. Marriage will teach you more about yourself than you think. Consider it a gift.
